CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Sumireko Usami
AGE: 15-16
CANON: Touhou Project

CANON HISTORY: Here
CANON PERSONALITY:
Personality: (Being a villain, the game doesn't get too deep into the inner workings of Sumireko's head/backstory, so some of this is informed by headcanon - but headcanon extrapolated logically from canon dialogue or events. It is indicated by italics, and referenced to the content it's extrapolated from.)

Sumireko's personality is deeply informed by the fact that she's a psychic in a world where the existence of the supernatural isn't widely known. This chiefly manifests in two ways: A massive ego, and a fascination with the occult.

First, the ego. Sumireko developed her powers at a very unfortunate time - around 13 or 14, when her sense of self-identity was at its most unstable. The result of this was that she came to the conclusion that hse was superior to other people, and this informed a lot of her time as an unapproachable asshole. Her arrogant attitude meant that, during her time in middle school, she had no friends to speak of - but she didn't exactly see it that way. She'd rather interpret it as her deciding that friends are unnecessary (except as a resource for information or social networking), and therefore deliberately pushing people away. The truth was probably a bit of both, but after coming to Gensokyo and meeting more super-powered weirdos like herself, she's come to accept that maybe having a few friends actually can make life more gratifying.

As a developing psychic with an internet connection, Sumireko quickly submersed herself in the world of the weird and the occult. She has an encyclopedic knowledge of weird urban legends and conspiracy theories, and collects the stories as a hobby (Reference: Allusion to 2chan creepypasta "Hasshaku-sama" in dialogue, talking about her school's Seven Mysteries in dialogue, familiarity with multiple urban legends referenced in dialogue). This hobby was a good part of her motivation for breaching the Gensokyo barrier - she just wanted to meet real supernatural creatures face to face. However, Sumireko's bravado wears off quickly in the face of the real paranormal. She grew accustomed to a simple lifestyle where she has special powers and the rest of the world doesn't - when she finds herself face to face with creatures from the same urban legends and ghost stories that she so adores, that whole dynamic is upended, and she quickly finds herself running in fear for her life. (Reference: Sumireko's storyline in ULIL, where despite finally making it into Gensokyo, she finds herself repeatedly believing youkai to be trying to kill her and running terrified from encounter to encounter.)

Sumireko is a ravenous consumer of pop culture - since she didn't have much in the way of friends growing up, she had plenty of time to focus on anime and the internet. That upbringing leaks into how she presents herself, a combination of veiled allusions to stuff she watched/read online and manga cliches painting over whatever insecurities she may have. (Reference: Allusion to Yo-Kai Watch in dialogue. Also, she's from the modern world but she wears a goddamn rune-covered cape, and alternates between a cocky, dramatic attitude and a more timid, polite attitude based on the scene context.) In conversation, she's upbeat but occasionally hard to follow as her train of thought jumps from point to point. She's quick to resort to violence if the situation calls for it, but also quick to call it off if she thinks she's in real danger. In short: Cheerfully unpredictable, quick to change moods, arrogant by nature but easy to take down a peg, eager to make friends but inexperienced in actually going through with it.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Sumireko is a powerful psychic, with at least the following abilities:
  1. High-mobility levitation - she can fly with no apparent effort, and move freely in all directions while doing so.
  2. Teleportation - can cover short distances in the blink of an eye without crossing through the intervening space.
  3. Telekinesis - she's shown throwing around dozens of pieces of debris at once, and even has an attack where she uses telekinesis to bring down a radio tower. This is probably her strongest power, and I'd accept it being nerfed as necessary.
  4. Laser beams - at least one of her attacks involves firing big purple lasers, about as wide as her head. They're probably non-lethal, though.
  5. Causing explosions to happen in mid-air. Not big ones, or even particularly strong ones, but she can pick a spot in the air, and then cause an explosion to happen there.
  6. Clairvoyance - this one's a bit more vague, but she carries a set of Zener cards around with her, so she probably has a reason for that.

Anything beyond that (chiefly her ability to leap into other dimensions through her dreams) is very nebulously defined and probably not appropriate for RP purposes, and I accordingly won't be touching on it here, so consider the above functionally a complete ability list. You can see her in action here.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Chloe Usami
AU AGE: 16
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: None

AU HISTORY:
  1. Third-generation Japanese-American.
  2. Obviosuly, never developed psychic powers or traveled to another dimension.
  3. Has otherwise been living a perfectly ordinary life for a teenage shitpostesr.
  4. Unlike her probably-an-only-child canon self, she has a sister who's several years older and in college.

AU PERSONALITY:
The primary difference is, obviously, that Chloe never developed Sumireko's psychic powers - instead, she just grew up imagining having those powers. So, the fascination with the occult and urban legends remains, but her ego is much more in control, since she has no objective proof of anything setting her apart from ordinary humans. So, she's more inclined to seek out friendships than her previous self, because she doesn't consider herself to be above the concerns of other humans.

While she isn't psychic, Chloe is still an avid believer of the supernatural. She watches every ghost hunting show, researches every urban legend, keeps track of every conspiracy theory. She doesn't really believe all of them, but she'll ramble about or defend even the sketchier ones - because it's fun, but also because she believes that a world full of weird unexplained mysteries is more fun than one where everything follows the same set of already-understood rules. Why would you want to live in a world where the Loch Ness Monster is a hoax, when you could live in one where there's a leftover dinosaur living in a lake and the government is trying to hide it? That kind of attitude carries her over-the-top attitude towards all things implausible.

Chloe has been known to, on occasion, claim to have psychic powers, but only in cases where it's really hard to verify them one way or the other.

Nagito Komaeda
Danganronpa
NEUTRAL
Nagito is an upbeat eccentric who Sumireko has chatted with a time or two, but she hasn't managed to form an opinion of him beyond that.
Renko Usami
Touhou Project
FAMILY
Renko is Sumireko's great-great-granddaughter, a fact that still violently weirds Sumireko out. They've gotten along well enough from their early conversations, but the dynamic has mostly been one of mutual bafflement.
Archer
Fate/Stay Night
ENEMY
Archer is a magical, insufferable smug asshole who has developed a habit of repatedly insulting Sumireko. She avoids him whenver possible, and thinks he might be a stalker.
Battler Ushiromiya
Umineko no Naku Koro ni
FRIEND
Battler is a guy who's good at chess and probably wants to be seen as a cool guy with an air of mystery about him. Or, at least, that's the impression Sumireko got of him. Her opinion may change if or when he tries to hit on her, but for now, he seems pretty all right.
Steph Zeiger
OC
GIRLFRIEND
Sumireko first met Steph while being rescued by her, and friendship quickly ensued. The more she learned about the half-bat nerd, the more she fell for her, until she finally confessed her love in the school courtyard. They're in a relationship now, but still trying to figure out what exactly that means for them.
Shigeru Miyata
OC
NEUTRAL
Sumireko mainly remembers Shigeru as that guy who runs the Signing Club and who upset Steph that one time, but he seems to have meant well, so she's over it. Whether he's a good person or a bad one remains to be seen.
Gon Freecss
Hunter x Hunter
FRIEND
Gon is an eccentric kid who seems to share in Sumireko's interest in investigating the weird goings-on around the school. She doesn't know much about him, but psychic powers seem to be more of a thing in his world, and he seems like an all right dude.
Rei Ryuugazaki
Free!
FRIEND
Rei is kinda fun to troll. Sumireko doesn't know him terribly well, but they have something of a rapport, and she'd probably help him out if he needed something. He's a bit of a downer sometimes, though.
Yu Narukami
Persona 4
FRIEND
Yu and Sumireko met in the Hide and Seek game, and both died. You can't just ignore someone who you were stabbed to death next to, so now they're friends. She thinks he's got a good head on his shoulders, and wouldn't mind getting to know him a bit better.

Character Information

Name: Sumireko Usami
Fandom: Touhou Project
Canonpoint: After Urban Legend in Limbo
Gender: Female
Age: 15

Physical Description: Here.

History:
The wiki page is a bit sparse, so here's the salient points:
  • Sumireko awakens to her psychic powers during middle school.
  • Being a teenager with superpowers and access to the internet, Sumireko develops a hell of an ego and alienates all of her peers.
  • Once she reaches high school, Sumireko starts a weird occult club as a weird reverse-psychology way of encouraging people to not associate with her, because she considers herself above them.
  • One thing leads to another, and Sumireko's powers develop to the point that, through dreams, she becomes able to catch glimpses of the hidden world of Gensokyo.
  • Wishing to visit this world for herself, Sumireko gathers seven power stones from areas of occult power on Earth (Stonehenge, the Pyramids, etc), and sends them into Gensokyo as a sort of psychic fishing line to drag magical beings out for her to meet with.
  • This works to the extent that she meets (and fights) several Gensokyo natives, and eventually makes plans to enter Gensokyo directly.
  • Things go wrong when it turns out that one of the Gensokyo youkai she fought before swapped out one of her power stones for a tanuki disguised as a power stone, and she ends up potentially stuck in Gensokyo forever.
  • A bunch of youkai gather and conspire to good-naturedly scare the shit out of Sumireko, until she manages to escape back to Earth.
  • Fearing that she might still get pulled back into Gensokyo, Sumireko tries to suicide bomb the Gensokyo border and take the whole place down with her.
  • Reimu defeats Sumireko, but ultimately just lets her go back to earth, figuring that the power stones have been kicked out of Gensokyo by now and that she's probably learned her lesson.
  • Ultimately, Sumireko is left once again only able to visit Gensokyo through her dreams, and she becomes popular there by regaling the populace with stories of the outside world.
  • Sumireko learns an important lesson about friendship.

Notes: Renko and Sumireko are implied to have some sort of connection (same last name, both members of the Secret Sealing Club, same hat), but it's never explicitly stated what it is. I've talked it over with Renko's player, and we agreed to go with Sumireko being Renko's grandmother.
